Bassetlaw Community Outreach
Community Outreach is a Nottinghamshire County Council LinkAge Plus project that started in Bassetlaw in March 2007 with the aim of helping older people remain independent and in their own homes.
The Community Outreach Advisor can visit older people in their own homes and offer advice and information on a number of local services such as Befriending Schemes, Transport and Meal Services.
Visits are made to local groups and clubs throughout the area to promote the service and support older people.
It is also possible to complete First Contact checklists during visits.
The Outreach Advisor has helped with issues such as:
- Making contact with groups and clubs to help combat isolation
- Crime prevention
- Adaptations to the home, e.g. Grab rails
- Helping to arrange DIY and gardening
- Arranging benefits checks
For more information on this service contact Laura Goad, Community Outreach Advisor at the Retford Action Centre on 01777 709650 or lgoad@retfordactioncentre.org.uk
Each Thursday Laura can be contacted through the Retford Resource for Older People on 01777 862745.

NORTH NOTTS CROSSROADS AND MACMILLAN CARERS SUPPORT SERVICE
North Notts Crossroads working with Macmillan cancer support offers a free home based carers support service to patients and their families who live in Ashfield, Mansfield, Newark and Bassetlaw areas in Nottinghamshire.
Their aim is to understand the individual needs of people living with cancer and life limiting illness and of those caring for them. It also provides whatever practical and emotional support suits their circumstances. This can help avoid admissions to hospital or residential care for patients who would like to remain in their own home.
All the care support workers are carefully selected paid members of staff who are trained to understand the needs of people with cancer or life limiting illness. Before they begin work we take up references and complete police checks.
North Notts Crossroads has over 20years experience of providing both carers respite services and personal care for people who wish to remain at home.
The Service is very flexible and can be tailored to suit individual needs it may include:
- Practical and emotional support
- Evening breaks for carers
- Overnight care service
- Preparation of meals and light housework
- Personal care with washing and dressing for example
- Outings for the person with care needs
- Help with giving medication
- A sympathetic and understanding person to talk to about worries and problems
- Regular breaks for carers during the day
